Tips for Starting Work

Starting a new job can be a very exciting experience: you get to learn new things, meet new people and build up your bank balance.
Here are Hippo Jobs' tips for getting off to a good start with your new employer:

Plan on how to get to work and be on time

Employers need to count on their employees being reliable and punctual. Prepare the night before and if you do find yourself running late call ahead to let them know that everything is ok.

Choose the right wardrobe

Looking good doesn't end at the interview. Make sure you shoes and clothes are clean and suitable not only for your position but also the company you're working for. The same thing applies to uniforms.

Learn your job quickly

Training might be given to you by an experience employee, independent training company or even your boss. When learning a new job you are bound to have questions and nobody expects you to know everything. It's always the best policy to ask any questions than to muddle on alone.

Learn about the Company

Most companies have rules and structures to help them operate smoothly. This could include break times, health and safety policies, using telephone/internet and how company vehicles are to be used. It's very important that you follow your company's guidelines and practices – that way you can't go wrong. You'll make an immediate impression and get a real feel of how things work in your workplace.

Work well with other people

In any job you'll be working with people – either as workmates or customers – and this always takes a certain amount of respect, tact and diplomacy. Get to know your colleagues and your customers.

Maintain a strong work ethic

No matter what type of work you do it is really important you that you have the right attitude towards your job.
