Hints and Tips
If you have just had a call from an employer to arrange an interview here are some good Hints and Tips to help you along the way;
- Look your best. Suitable clothing; clean, simple and appropriate
- Allow plenty of time to arrive at your interview. Get there 10 minutes early
- Bring a copy of your resume to the interview - you'll look organised, you can refer to it...and interviewers tend to loose them
- Do some research on the company or industry you are being interview for. Friends, family, school, uni, the internet are all good sources.
Just remember that it is natural to be nervous being interviewed for a job - just keep reminding yourself that you are one step away from hitting pay-dirt. Take your time answering questions. You will have better responses if you are calm and composed (and with no waffles).
Here are some examples of staying cool under interview pressure
- Going off the subject (A to B via K)
You might say – "On second thoughts – a better approach would be...". This way you get to the point, rather than taking 3 minutes to find a way to your final answer.
- Difficult questions ( questions that you don't fully understand)
You can ask the interview to explain further – "I'm not sure I know what you mean. Could you clarify what you mean by...?"' is a simple response to these type of questions. If you can't find an answer to a question then the best policy is honesty.
- Finishing your answers (in style)
Yes I think I have covered everything" indicates you have finished responding to a question
In all interviews, an employer wants to know about YOU and specific examples of when you have demonstrated qualities required for the job you have applied for. It is important to present yourself, skills and achievements in an honest and positive light. Best of Hippo luck.
