About hippo.com.au

hippo.com.au aims to be the best provider of flexible, part-time and casual jobs in Australia, although it also lists full-time work as well.

We believe that there's an easier way for people to find work that suits their lifestyles. There are plenty of employers out there looking for people to work with them, and there are lots of people searching for part-time and casual work that suits their busy lifestyles. Our job here at hippo.com.au is to bring these two groups together.

At hippo.com.au job-seekers can create personal profiles, based on their skills, interests and experiences. We understand that not everyone has heaps of work experience to put on their resume – we've all got to start somewhere! So hippo.com.au converts this personal information into a detailed resume, complete with a video profile, which really lets people get their personality across.

For employers, hippo.com.au offers incredibly detailed profiles of candidates. This helps to make sure that employers get exactly the right candidate for the role. We’ve also got a huge database of candidates.

A Short History of hippo.com.au

While completing his undergraduate degree at RMIT University, James Masini found that finding a job with little previous experience, that paid well and fitted in with his study timetables difficult.

Looking at other career websites, he realised there was no job site that specifically targeted young people who wanted casual or part-time work.

Through his Business Management Entrepreneurship undergraduate degree, which exposed him to some of Australia’s leading entrepreneurs and business operators, James developed the business concept for Hippo - a jobs website targeting young Australians and visitors from overseas who wanted casual or part-time work.

He then approached business people who backed his business plan, and with their financial support, Hippo Jobs was born.

This support group included Business guru Janine Allis, the founder and former CEO of the very successful Boost Juice stores, who was awarded Telstra Business Woman of the year in 2004.

Also instrumental in lending support was Mark Besen, a retailer and property developer with over 55 years experience and also a driving force behind the multi-faceted Sussan Group since 1950.

Both Janine Allis and Mark Besen took equity positions on the Hippo board.

In April 2009, it was announced that Hippo Jobs had been acquired by Classified Ad Ventures.

Simon Baker, CEO of Classified Ad Ventures, and now Chairman of hippo.com.au, says:

“As part of Classified Ad Ventures, advertisers and candidates using hippo.com.au will benefit from a combined 40 years of online classifieds experience and receive better results.”

“Niche jobs sites are a growing opportunity. Managers have less time than ever to trawl through the hundreds of irrelevant CVs they often receive from general jobs sites. Our previous investment in artshub.com.au shows that by having a targeted audience we are able to deliver a small number of quality candidates that meet advertisers’ requirements.”

Classified Ad Ventures was founded by Simon Baker, the former CEO and Managing Director of the REA Group Ltd, in mid 2008. Simon is a leading global expert in the field of online classified advertising and during his time at the REA Group he grew revenues from $4 million in the 2001 financial year to $155 million in 2008.

Classified Ad Ventures helps the owners and operators of classified sites around the world and their advertisers gain the most from using the internet to advertise classified listings.

To make this happen its consulting team works on inspiring the owners and operators of classifieds sites, its innovation team develops new products and services and its investment team takes equity stakes in high quality online classifieds businesses.

hippo.com.au is Classified Ad Ventures' seventh investment.
